Personal Page for Jacquelyn G. Smith

I teach fourth grade at Fairfield Elementary School, in The Bethel School District, in Eugene, Oregon. My unofficial title is also Technology Representative for my building. I live in the foothills of the Coastal Mountains with my two daughters and husband. My career path has included Social Worker, Pastry Chef and most recently teacher. I enjoy traveling, especially to Mexico, sailing and eating only the finest of chocolate. My sister lives in Alaska and she is responsible for introducing me to the Iditarod in l991. It has become a much anticipated unit of study by my students. Using the tools of technology is a very important part of the learning environment I create for my students. It was only logical then that my students would use the World Wide Web to share with others what they have learned about the Iditarod. My sister and I conceived the idea for this project in the fall of l997. She found our Alaskan partners for us. Mrs. Seeba's students, Jake and Jillian served as our "on site" reporters, photographers and local source for the information in this project. My students in Eugene were the "technology connection" learning the software programs, scouring the www for information and building many of the web pages. As the project progressed each team of students gradually began to share in the other teams roles. There were many frantic emails back and forth as the teams learned how to capture and send images and information. This project has been a learning adventure for all of us. We invite you to email us with questions about our project or the Iditarod. Mush on.
