Anchorage was discovered when Captain James Cook made his famous voyage to Alaska in 1778 and drew detailed maps of the area naming such landmarks as Mount Saint Augustine, Montague Island, Prince William Sound, Turnagain Arm, and Cape Elizabeth. The Anchorage townsite was not established until 1914. This was when the federal government selected it as the headquarters for the Seward to Fairbanks railroad.
Anchorage has a modern climate, with average temperatures in the mid-to-low 60's during summer months. Since we're an ocean city, the wind likes to blow occasionaly. June and July bring more than 20 hours of light a day, giving everyone more energy.
