Part of the cost of driving a car includes the cost of the gas needed to drive the car during the year. The cost of gas depends on the size of the car you drive. If you have a  compact car like a Corolla, you would have to pay about $650 for gas per year, compared to a luxury car like Cadillac, which would cost you $1,393 per year. The cost of gas for a luxury car is more than twice the cost of gas for a compact car! The table below shows different kinds of cars, their mpg, and their annual cost of gas.*

Car Type Average MPG Annual fuel cost * in dollars
Sub-Compact 36 542
Compact 30 650
Midsize 22 886
Van 17 1147
Luxury 14 1393

*Based on the EPA standard of driving 15,000 miles per year at an average of $1.30 per gallon

From the table above, the cost of gas per year is:

Sub-Compact: $542 per year

Luxury: $1393 per year

The extra cost per year

$1393 - $542 = $851

He will pay $851 more per year if he changes from subcompact to a luxury car.
