Anthropometry is the study of  human body sizes and proportions. An anthropometrist is a scientific person who gathers information on the size of the human body and its components. People use this data to design clothing, car interiors, furniture, and interiors for homes and offices. Artists use this information to accurately draw and sculpt the human form.

No two people are identical in body dimensions, not even identical twins. By taking measurements from many people of different genders, ages, ethnic and racial background, differences can be determined and databases developed.

There are no "exact rules" to predict a body measurement based entirely on the relationship of one part of a body to another body measurement. But, there are relationships that can be called "rules of thumb" that are useful in relating one body measurement to another.

Here are two of them:  Predicting the height of an adult when a shinbone or tibia is known.

Height (inches)= 2.6 ´ Length of tibia (inches) + 25.5

Predicting the circumference of a person's neck from the circumference of their wrist.

Circumference of the neck (inches)= 2 ´ Circumference of the Wrist

If Tom's tibia (measured between the top of the foot and middle the of kneecap) is 18 inches, what is Tom's estimated height?

Height = 2.6 ´ 18 (inches) + 25.5

= 72.3 inches or 6 feet tall

Mary has a tibia of 12 inches and a wrist circumference of 5 inches. What is her height and neck circumference?

Estimate the answer:

Height: 60 inches  Neck Size: 12 inches
Height: 57 inches  Neck Size: 10 inches
Height: 54 inches  Neck Size: 14 inches
