Bits and Bytes

A bit is an abbreviation for binary digit and is the smallestunit of data the computer can understand.  Originally a byte was madeup of eight bits.  Computers today have 6 or 32 bits in a byte. Memory data is measured in megabytes which equals 1,000,000 bytes each. A byte can represent a letter, a number, or a character.
