Exploring Sharks

Some sharks are dangerous animals. They have been on theearth for millions of years. Sharks haven't changed much during those years, but there are many different species of sharks that are still being discovered. All sharks are not harmful. To them we are invading their home. So to them we are kind of a mystery.

Sharks come in all kinds of different sizes and shapes. One of their close relatives are rays. Most sharks are gray and have skin that feels like sandpaper. They have sharp pointy scales(also called placoid scales). They have to seven gill slits on the side of them.

Almost all of these sharks can be found in tropical or subtropical waters. Sharks are found in all oceans and seas. There are about 350 species of sharks but they are still discovering more and more sharks.

Most sharks are carnivores but a few sharks eat plankton such as the Basking Shark. You can tell males from females because males have claspers. All sharks have skeletons made up of cartilage which is the same thing that our ears and noses are made up of. Sharks are mostly held together by their muscles and skin.

A shark’s mouth is located on the underside of the head. A shark has 3 rows of teeth in its mouth at one time. A shark can use up to 30,000 teeth in a lifetime. A shark’s liver has lots of vitamin A in it. A shark’s fins are used for different kinds of soups.
