the deep sea:
The part of the world's oceans called the deep sea is a vast home for life
on Earth. It is a major part of the ocean. Despite its large volume, it
remains the least known and explored place on Earth, because of its inaccessibility.
deep sea characteristics:
The deep sea is basically cold and completely dark. Most shallower portions
keep temperatures below 50 degrees F. The temperature decreases with depth
but below 10,000 feet, it is about 37 degrees F everywhere.
Salinity (saltiness) is constant in the deep sea, and varies little anywhere.
Oxygen is present in sufficient amounts to support life in all deep sea
areas excluding the few, isolated oceanic trenches. Food is scarce. The
environment must receive its food from organic material that sinks from
lighted surface waters or is transported from land areas.
