Panthera tigris sumatrae

Size

The smallest of all the tigers, head/rear length 7-8 ft

Weight

They weigh 220-330 pounds.

Description

Dark reddish ochre whiskers, muzzle, throat, chest, and belly. The insides of limbs are cream colored. Stripes more numerous and closely spaced than on other tigers. The cheek hair is long, with a short neck mane. Strips often degenerate into spots.

Food

Cattle, deer, wild pigs, frogs, and termites.

Habitat

Northern and mountainous southwestern Sumatra, the world's sixth largest island. The island is covered by a very heavy tropical type jungle.

Other Facts

Zoos are acquiring new Sumatran tigers to supplement the tigers already in captivity.
