"Flying Wild" Math

in the

Free Flight Aviary

The aviary at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo is the largest of its kind in the United States, and the second largest in the world. Normal wear in addition to animal and storm damage make periodic replacement of the netting necessary.

1. 142,000 square feet of nylon mesh covers the aviary. If this netting costs $1.26 a square yard, what is the estimated cost of replacement (not including labor)?

2. How can you put 21 Sandhill Cranes into 4 pens and still have an odd number in each pen? remember, you don't have to have the same number in each pen, but the number must always be odd.
