"Wild" Math

Food for Thought

With over 7000 hungry mouths to feed daily, the grocery bill for Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo is enormous. Try your hand at figuring the following costs.

1. Our annual grocery bill is over 1/4 million dollars.

Approximately how much is that a day?

2. Believe it or not, several species eat dog food - at the rate of 7240 pounds in 6 months! At $ 12.75 for every 25 pound bag, how much does it cost each year to "chow down"?

3. Hard-boiled eggs are used at the rate of 130 a day. If eggs are $0.60 a dozen, how much egg money do we "shell out " in a year ?

4. Even zoo animals need their fresh vegetables. Using the

following daily amounts and prices, what is our produce bill each day?

10 lbs. potatoes @$0.12 lb.

20 lbs. onions @$0.19 lb.

38 lbs. oranges @$0.24 lb.

75 lbs. carrots @ $0.90 for 5 lbs.

14 bunches celery @ $0.89 bunch

60lbs. apples@ $ 0.17 lb

5. In a recent month, a variety of insectivores consumed 35,750 crickets. (Fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians also eat them). At $12 per thousand, what was the cost of the insects? If shipping charges were added - at $1.94 per thousand, what was the total monthly cricket bill?
