Windows

Back in the Middle Ages you could tell the social status of a house because of the windows. The poor people had small holes covered by wooden shutters that were shut at night or in cold weather. The richer people had fenestral windows, which were lattice frames covered in linen that had been soaked in substances called resin and tallow. These let in light on nice days.

Horn was called the plastic of Medieval times because it was cheap and pliable. To make a horn windowpane, the horn was first softened in water for three months, then unwound, split, and polished until it was transparent.
