Moats

Sometimes a castle had a moat around it, which meant a deep trench was dug around the edge of the castle. The moat was sometimes filled with water, but not always. A drawbridge was lowered over the moat so that people could walk across into the castle. On some castles there were two drawbridges: one for people and one for horses and heavy things.
