Galaxies are stars gathered upin large groups of 100-200 billion. Our galaxy contains about 100 billionstars. It is known as the Milky Way. The Milky Way, in turn, is only oneof the several hundred million such galaxies within the viewing range ofthe larger modern telescopes. Stars that you can see with the naked eyeare those that lie closest to our solar system in the Milky Way. The starnearest to the solar system is the triple star. It lies about 40 trillionkm from earth. The center of the Milky Way contains over half of the starsin the galaxy. The stars in the center of the Milky Way are gathered upcloser together than the sun and its surrounding stars. It takes lightabout 100,000 years to travel from one side of the Milky Way. There aremany kinds of galaxies such as a spiralgalaxy, elliptical galaxy, and irregulargalaxy. There are many kinds of galaxies, but it would take a whileto name them all. In the center of galaxies many stars will collide althoughthey seem so very far apart. Don't get confused. The Milky Way we're talkingabout is not the delicious snack kids love.Return to top
