1871 was an unusal year. The first rain storm all summer was on July 8. 2.54 cm of rain fell.Then there was no rain again until September. Only a little rain came.Everything was as dry as kiddling . At the beginning of the fire the wind was 35 miles per hour. The wind and a up draft lifted flames hundreds of feet into the sky. It reminded some people of summer . The wind coming off the prairie was strong all day in the month of October .It was so dry that when the wind blew the forest crackled.
