Peshtigo Destruction

The fire destroyed $5 million dollars of property. The fire spread into Michigan. Before the fire there were little fires. Within a half-hour and some people say 10 minutes, all the buildings were destroyed. Besides destroying the town, the fire ruined hundreds of farms and most of the animals. It destroyed 200 square miles of forest.

Historians figure about 1,200 people died in Peshtigo. Most people died because the fire took up a lot of the oxygen that they needed to breathe. Some people died because they couldn't get to water. In the Sugar Bushes 241 bodies were found. These people died because they had no water to go to.
