These classes revolve around size, power, speed, how many aircraft they carry, what kind of engines they have, and what electronics they have. Some classes are used for destroying submarines. Others might be used for attack and defense. The aircraft carrier classes are named for famous naval ships and US battles. The USS stands for United States Ship of War.
