Europe has many famous caves. In 1940 a group of boys discovered the Lascaux cave in France. It is famous because there are paintings made by people who lived 17,000 years ago. The paintings are of horses, bulls, deer, and other animals. Copies of these paintings are at the Cincinnati Natural History Museum.

Dragons Lair cave in Europe is famous because scientists found fossils of cave bears that lived 50,000 years ago. Another famous European cave is the Blue Grotto. It is on the Island Capri which is off southern Italy. It is Capris most famous cave. It is 4 miles long and less than 2 miles wide. The highest point is 1,930 feet above the sea. Eisiesenwelt is another famous cave in Europe. It is located in Tennengebirge, a range of mountains in the Austrian Alps. It is famous because it is the biggest ice cave. Another famous cave is the Pierre-Saint-Martin. It is located in France and Spain. It is famous because it is 4,403 feet deep. The Naracoorte caves are famous caves. They are located in South Australia. They are famous because they have huge sink holes.

The lava bed caves of northern California are famous caves. They are famous because there are many rock formations created by ancient volcanoes and earthquakes.

Waitomo caves in New Zealand are famous because glowworms giving off light makes it look like stars.

Another famous cave is the Sarawak Chamber. It is located in Borneo which is an island of southern Asia. It is famous because of its huge chamber.
