Equipment

A number of pieces of basic equipment are required to make set net fishing safe, and let the set net fisherman make as much money as possible. Nets are the basic part of the set net industry. However, nets must be positioned by using a truck, tractor, or skiff. The nets must be secured by anchors tied to strong lines attached to each end of the net. After a tide brings some fish into the net, the fish must be removed from the net. This could be done in several ways, using different pieces of equipment. A powered skiff (boat) can be used to pull the net in. A crew of fishermen can remove the fish. This is done by picking one end of the net into the skiff and pulling themselves along the net, removing the fish as they go from one end of the net to the other. This is called picking the net.
