NICK AND SAM'S BIRD SEED PAGE

This is our page about bird seed. Some birds don't eat seed. They eat insects and berries. This page will tell you all about the different kinds of food they eat.

The cardinal's favorite food is "black oil sunflower seed." Cardinals will eat a ton of the seed. Twenty five lbs. of it cost $9.99. Finches like thistle seed best. Thistle is called niger if it comes from Africa; it's called thistle if it comes from Nepal. Three lbs. of thistle cost $5.50; 20 lbs. cost $31.95. Woodpecker seed is often good for woodpeckers but also attracts grackles; putting a piece of white paper anywhere on the feeder stops the grackles. Grackles are a big pest because they eat ALL the seed in any one feeder. They come in big hordes.

If you don't want to buy seed you can buy "suet cakes" -- mmm, mmm! Suet cakes are a mixture of fat (suet) and some other things, such as bird seed and insects. The suet cakes come in a "brick." Suet cakes are usually $2.99 to $3.99.
