Juneau, the Capital of Alaska

 

Juneau is the capital of the whole state of Alaska. Juneau is placed right beside a mountain side and that mountain is Mt. Juneau. Juneau is in the Southeast Region.

The State Government is run in Juneau. At this time (1998) our Governor is Tony Knowles. He used to be the mayor of Anchorage.

Juneau is one of Alaska's biggest and most important ports. Juneau is famous for fishing. Juneau has a facility that handles all the fishing; it is like an enormous fish cannery.

Around Juneau there are a lot of forests. There are a lot spruce and hemlock trees. A lot of these trees are turned into lumber.

Juneau was named after a man named Joe Juneau. He discovered gold in the area of Juneau. Juneau became a town during the gold rush in 1880.

Juneau the biggest city in the Southeast Region. It has approximately 29,000 residents.

There are several glaciers in the Southeast Region. One of the most famous is Mendenhall Glacier. It is only about 12 miles away from the city of Juneau.
