Fairbanks

 

About 97,000 people live in Interior Alaska. Fairbanks is in the Interior, approximately 400 miles north of Anchorage. The Yukon Quest sled dog race is held between Fairbanks and Whitehorse, Canada every year.

In Fairbanks there are Native Indian tribes, including Athabaskan, who also live in the Interior in little villages.

Fairbanks was named after Charles Fairbanks because he was elected Vice President of the United States, and he did some pretty nice things while he was Vice President.

Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska. In 1902 people discovered gold on the Tanana River. People began to teach classes that studied minerals and helped the miners. Later it became the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.

Fairbanks is the closest major city in the United States to the Arctic Circle, Which is located 130 miles to the north. Fairbanks is on the Chena River.

In the year 1967 a big flood happened in Fairbanks and it caused six people to lose their lives and 75,000,000 dollars in damage.

The nickname for Fairbanks is THE HEART OF THE GOLDEN NORTH. It is located at the end of the Alaska Highway and the Alaska Railroad.
