Aleuts

The people who call themselves Aleuts live on the tiny islands of the Aleutian Chain. They live on over a 1,000 miles of islands that stretch from the Alaska Peninsula all the way to the western end of the Aleutians.

The Aleuts call themselves Unangax (oo-nung-ah),and these days there are ten major Aleut villages. They are Atka, Nikolski, Akutan, Unalaska, False Pass, Nelson Lagoon, King Cove, Sand Point, St. Paul and St. George. About 2,000 people live in these 10 villages. Almost as many Aleuts live in the other parts of Alaska.

In most Aleut communities the people commercial fish for a living. A lot of these communities have big fishing ports and sea food processing plants.

Most Aleuts depend on hunting, fishing and the gathering of beach foods. This is called a subsistence lifestyle.
