I found your sight a great place to start. Though I would like to see a name origin page. One where folks who are native and non-native can see that the word "Eskimo" is not a self designation. The "Real People" are Inupiat, Yupik, Cupik, Inuit, etc...

Keep up the good work,

GH

II think that your website is very interesting, but that you should give us more information abou the Eskimos. For example, writing a paragraph or two on what their culture is (was) like, how the hunted...(etc) Good job! Continue your good work!

I have a question. Today in class we were talking about eskimos.I asked my teacher,"If eskimos live in igloos, how can they burn a fire inside of the igloo without melting it?"She said that she had no clue, but I had asked a really good question. She asked me to research it and find out.I've looked everywhere and no success. If you have the answer please email it to me. Again, the question is:If Eskimos live in igloos, how can they burn a fire inside of the igloo without melting it?

I found your site easy to navigate and easy to read. You ahve done a great job and I suppose a great service considering all the comments people are making. I am a writer living in Southern California and I am considering a book which takes place in a small Eskimo fishing village and your site has given me a good head start on my research. Thank you for a job well-done. Monty

I thought that the site was informative and interesting however, as I am interested in Archaeology and have been following some of the findings concerning prehistoric Eskimos sites, I am interested in "how to" or why were certain things made in a certain way. I am a member of the Society of Primitive Technology. I am Shawnee Indian and my wife is Cheyenne. I am interested in cultures from all over the world as we have all had a primitive begining. Again, thanks for the site.

My girlfriend and i had a bet that this site settled. I said that Eskimos did not live in Alaska. That they only lived north of there and they only lived in igloos. I was proven wrong. I do think the site should have more links or more information about the eskimo culture.

I was Ordinary Seaman on USMS North Star in 1947. The North Star ship was a supply vessel operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. We boarded the villagers of Savoonga and transported them to Gambel in order that they could be closer to their fishing area. Our ship anchored off shore and the villagers came to the ship in the kayaks and umiak canoes. They were very colorful. The women wore calico dresses over their outer clothing. I overheard the village chief say to our skipper, "Women with chicken in belly no go up ladder." This was in reference to the pregnant women who would be lifted onto the ship by our loading platform.

When a Inupiaq lady wears wolverine on her ruff, and has claws on it, it means she has a high status of cooking, sewing, tanning the hides. Inupiaq means "real people"

HELLO, The website was very informative and valuable. As a Native American woman, I can relate to all the cooking that is done when the men bring home their kill. I am planning to teach Alaskan children in another year. There is so much I would like to learn about the cultures. I will begin my third year teaching here at Jemez Valley Elem. I live on a reservation called Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico. Our children speak the Towa language. It's unique in that no other pueblo speaks the language. My goals in teaching are to teach children of another language how to speak English effectively, but yet retain their own culture. Is there anyone from a rural village in Alaska who I can connect with? Thanks so much!

L.S.,

Nice site about the Eskimo lifestyle. I learned something as an European not knowing all myths were false or true.

I have some short question and would appriciate any answer(s) from the Inupiat community over there.

Could anyone please explain the term "queenuk"?

Im looking forward receiving any help, answers or contributions in return.

Keep up the good work and thanks in advance,

What this says about how Eskimos never lived in igloos is wrong. If they didnt live in igloos where did they live? In "Ordanary" houses like us back when Russia and Alaska had made the land bridge? You have got to be kidding me.

Yupik children who are attending a conference here in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, have been credited with bringing some drought relief to the area. Due to their "lightning and thunder dance", a surprise thunderstorm dumped 3-inches of rain on parched ground yesterday, July 28th. Most of Pennsylvania has been in a drought emergency since July 20th. (See news article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 7/29/99)

I am Eskimo from Nome, Alaska. I have been here in Washington since my Aunt Elva Bundy took me after my mother passed away 11 months after she had me. I trying to get my family tree together for my children and grandchildren. My mother's name was Lena Bundy and my father's name is David Garnie. David Garnie father was Franco(ko) Garnie(ey). I think his mother was Parline (Payline) garnie(ney). I have been in contact with my brother Joe Garnie and am working with him to get my father's side. My mother's father was Arthur Bundy and my mother's mother was Martha Sherman Bundy (Kus-soo-nik). Martha Sherman's father was John Sherman and her mother was Ella Sherman (oo-yak-oor-ruk). My grandparents had Elva, Lena, Marie, Dewitt, Cora and Morris Bundy. I am in contact with Cora's children and getting that information I hope. Morris Bundy is living with me, and did help a little, but he says he forgotten so much. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. I lost all my information that my great- granduncle Enock Sherman supplied me, so I need anyone that knows that side to help me there. It is hard trying to get a family history for the future generations, but I want to do this for them. Also, any stories or legends will greatly be appreciated for our family tree and for Alaska knowledge for my children and grandchildren were born here in Washington. I want them to know their history also. Thank you very much for any help. Hear from you soon.
