Baleen- Baleen consists of two horny plates attached to the roof of the whale's mouth. Each plate is made for filtering food.
Barnacles- Marine animals that are cemented to the bodies of larger sea creatures.
Blubber- Fat that lies between the skin and flesh of marine mammals. Blubber acts as a layer of insulation.
Endangered- Very close to becoming extinct.
Extinct- No longer alive or existing.
Harpoon- A hunting weapon developed by the Inupiat. The shaft was made out of walrus ivory or caribou antler.
International Whaling Commission- An international organization founded in 1946 to regulate the whaling industry.
Inupiat- The name given to North Slope Alaskan Inupiat.
Krill- Shrimp-like marine animals that float freely in the ocean.
Mammal- An animal that is warm-blooded, has a backbone, and some form of body hair. The mother nurses her babies.
Migration- Seasonal movements of animals that travel to chosen areas for feeding, breeding, or giving birth.
Muktuk- Whale blubber with skin still attached.
Ooksook- Blubber that is melted down for an oil used in cooking.
Plankton- Marine organisms that are eaten by larger animals.
Pod- A small group of whales that travel together.
Ulu- A shaped tool with a rounded blade, used to separate blubber from the skin.
Umiak- A whaling boat large enough to hold 8 people. It is open and covered with a walrus skin. It also has a wooden frame.
Yupik- Eskimos that live on the western coast of Alaska.
