The bowhead is a large whale that is up to 20 meters in length. It is a slow swimming baleen whale. These whales weigh up to 3 tons. It has a large head and mouth. The large mouth has six hundred baleen plates. Most of the bowhead whale's food comes from really small amphipods in the ocean water. These are really tiny organisms that the whale sifts through the baleen and eats.
Bowhead whales have a baby called a calf every three to six years. The mother carries the calf in her stomach for one year before giving birth. Most bowhead whales give birth to their calves during the month of May.
The Eskimos of Alaska have been hunting bowhead whales for over 1000 years.
