AN INTERVIEW WITH MRS. KNOX

by Meredith

I interviewed Mrs. Knox, the science resource teacher at St. Thomas Episcopal School about her experiences with the mastiff bat. Mrs. Knox also runs the Wee Care Wildlife Center that cares for sick animals.

1. How did you see the bat?

Both bats were brought to me because they could not fly.

2. How long did it take to rehabilitate it?

It took months to rehabilitate.

3. What did you have to do?

First we had to hold it so it would get used to hanging. Then we had to drop it so that it would learn to open its wings. Then it had to learn to glide, and finally it was in a flight cage.

4. What did it look like?

It is the largest bat in Florida. It is dark brown and has large barrel ears that come to a point in the middle of its forehead.

5. How did the bat respond?

It was weak and slow to respond at first. But after it opened its wings, it could fly.
