The Monroe Tavern

The Monroe Tavern, a historical landmark, has undergone
many changes since it was built around 1695. Fifteen of the seventy-three
Minute Men at the battle on the Lexington Green on the morning of April
19th, 1776 were from the Monroe family. Three of them died that
day at the beginning of the war. According to an account by William Monroe,
the British stopped at his tavern where they dressed their wounded. They
were waited on by a lame man named Raymond; Raymond was shot by the British
when he tried to escape. The Percy Room is named after Earl Percy because
he used the room as a hospital and headquarters on the April 19th.
