i am just wonder why this race is cool if they start with 16 healthy dogs but they can end up with only 5 healthy dogs. it can't be that great if 11 dogs die or are too sick to finish the race! i love dogs but i don't want to see them in pain!

I think the dogs are really important because, the dogs can be famous one day if they win the dog race when ever they are racing against other dogs all across the whole wide world. I just love the book it was so great. The first Iditarod was held so mushers could get medicine for people that were sick. They started at Anchorage and ended at Nome. The mushers first tried by train, plain and ship. They then decided that that didn't work so they tried dogs and a team. P.S. I love your website!!!!

I have been working with the Iditarod since 1990 when the office I was working at sponsored Emmit Peters (The Yukon Fox) from Ruby, Alaska. Last summer and again this summer I will be working with Raymie Redington at the Iditarod Headquarters in wasilla on weekends. I used to hunt moose along one section of the trail not to far from White Mountain. In fact, one year I shot a moose not a hundred feet from a trail marker. Also, one glorious fall day about 10 years ago, from where I sat on the hill, I could see 36 moose and 9 grizzly bears. I've snowmachined the trail from White Mountain to Nome quite a few times and a nice ride it is, if the weather is nice!

In the past couple years I have had several elementary teachers from the states ask me where on the web they could find information on the Iditarod Sled Dog Race that was geared for their aged students. Their classes would be following the race but they wanted a site that could give their students more then just who won. Now they have one designed by and for these aged students. You have took much care to cover aspects of the race that many people would not even think existed. I hope you are aware of your talent and continue to work with it.

The information that I have just read has been very interesting to me, many of the things I read I had actually seen, such as the start and the end of the Iditarod. There is so much information in this article . I am very proud that my granddaughter Staci worked on this project.

I have seen many finishes of the Iditarod. My first on to see was in 1985 and that was very exciting as it was Libby Riddles winning-the first women. I have helped make booties for Mike Owens when he ran the race. He lives in Nome.
