Checker Duties
There are checkers at each checkpoint and their job is to check in each musher as they arrive. They record the time they arrive and the number of dogs they have. The checker also sees how many dogs they are carrying in the sled and how many they are dropping.
Each musher must have with them at all times the following items:
1. Proper cold weather sleeping bag weighing a minimum of five pounds.
2. Ax, head to weigh a minimum of 1-3/4 pounds, with a handle 22" long.
3. One pair of snow shoes with bindings, each shoe must be at least 252 square inches in size.
4. Any promotional material provided by the ITC (Iditarod Trail Committee).
5. Eight booties for each dog in the sled or in use.
6. One cooker and pot that can boil at least three gallons of water.
7. Veterinarian notebook, that needs to be given to the veterinarian at each checkpoint.
The gear cannot be checked at the Eagle River, Wasilla, Knik and Safety checkpoints.
