Alaska isn't really next to Hawaii. If you look on a globe instead of a United States map, you will see that Alaska is a lot closer to the North Pole. Hawaii is closer to Mexico than it is to Alaska. On flat United States maps, they inset maps of Alaska and Hawaii next to each other. Those maps don't show where Alaska and Hawaii are or how big they are, just what shape they are.
