Caribou

There are no caribou in Anchorage, but there are thousands and thousands of them in Alaska.  Caribou are wild reindeer.  They are the only member of the deer family where the cows have antlers.

Caribou don't stay in one place for long.  They roam in big herds which travel as far as 2,700 miles in a year.  They have broad hoofs so they don't sink too deep into the snow or the tundra. They use their hoofs to dig for food in the winter and as paddles to help them swim.

In the summer, caribou are sometimes covered with mosquitoes.  Mosquitoes can drink up to a quart of a caribou's blood in a week.

Caribou have hollow hair.  That helps them float and also helps keep them warm in the cold winter.
