A Favorite Afternoon Hike

My favorite afternoon hike is only 15 minutes from my house. We start at Potter’s Marsh and end up at McHugh Creek. My favorite time to hike is in the fall because all the leaves are turning pretty colors and we can pick cranberries, rosehips, raspberries and watermelon berries along the way. I also like to pick and suck honeysuckle flowers which taste like honey. In the spring, we look for fiddlehead ferns because they are fun to eat.

About halfway down the trail is a beautiful lookout rock where we sit and have a juice break. Across the inlet is snow covered mountain tops. A couple of times we even saw beluga whales in the inlet waters below. Another time we saw a porcupine climbing a tree. We often see moose droppings and bear paw prints on the ground. We always see squirrels and mosquitoes.

Toward the end of the trail, close to the McHugh Creek Picnic area, is my favorite climbing tree. It’s a tradition to stop and climb it before we finish our hike. After our hike we roast hot dogs and marshmallows and play in the water. We walk through a big tunnel, under the highway, to a big rock pile. We collect lots of flat skinny rocks that we pretend are silver, but they are really shale. Then it’s time to go home.
