Mother Teresa

1910-1997

Many called Mother Teresa a living saint. She was born in Skopje, Macedonia in 1910. Her parents were both extremely religious and encouraged their three children to help the poor whenever possible. Mother Teresa's older sister would often take her on visits to see sick, elderly, and lonely people. These visits made Mother Teresa want to help even more people.

When Mother Teresa was just twelve, she decided to be a nun. In order to do this she needed to travel and learn new languages. She studied the English language in Dublin , Ireland, then left for India at age eighteen. There she learned the rules of her order, studied Scripture and learned how to be a teacher.

In 1948 Mother Teresa decided to start an outdoor school. She would teach as many as forty children each day under a tree. The rest of her day was spent helping the sick, poor, and dying people of Calcutta.

Mother Teresa became the mother superior of a new order in 1950. With the donations her convent received, she was able to establish several organizations, such as Missionaries of Charity, the Nirmal Hriday, the Home for the Dying, and the Children's Home of the Immaculate Heart.

Awards and acknowledgements Mother Teresa earned throughout her life included the first Pope John XXIII Peace Prize, the U.S> Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Nobel Peace Prize, and more.

Mother Teresa died just months ago, and although she is gone, few could ever forget her efforts and sincere concern for humanity.
