Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany. Anne's father, Otto, owned several stores and was well known around the Jewish community. Anne is famous for the diary she wrote while in hiding.
In 1934 Anne's family went to live in Amsterdam to get away from the Nazi's. In 1940 the family again made plans to escape from the Nazi's. They would move into hiding. This happened because Margot, Anne's sister, was supposed to go to deportation. They were to hide above Anne's father's store in a secret room. Also staying with them were the Van Pelses and a dentist.
Employees of the store brought them up food, but only a few times a week. While in the hideout Anne wrote her famous diary.
In 1944 the secret hideout was found. A burglar got into the store below and found the door leading up to the hideout. The Germans arrested him and so he didn't have to go to jail, he told them where the hideout was.
Everyone was taken to a Holocaust camp. Anne and her sister Margot, were each transported to the Bergen Belson camp. During Spring of 1945, Anne and her sister died of the typhus fever epidemic.
Anne's father Otto Frank, was the only survivor of the family. He was given Anne's diary by Miep Gies, who had gone back to the hideout and found the diary on a windowsill.
Otto published the diary with the name of Het Achtechuis, the German name of the diary in which Anne had named it. In 1953 the diary was published in the U.S.A. and titled The Diary of a Young Girl. It became a best seller and was written in 30 languages.
