Joan of Arc

1412-1431

Joan of Arc was born in France in the year 1412. She was the third of five children in her family. She lived in the town of Dromremy, and grew up driving the heard and learning religion from her mom.

During this time, France was devastated by the Black Death (also known as The Plague). It had recently been defeated in the Hundred Years War and the English occupied Paris, and were continuing to take over the country.

The children of the Dromremy were brought up to support the French and often played soldier games at abandoned castles.

At the age of 12, Joan said that she began to hear voices form God. The voices were those of the saints, and they told her that she had a mission to help free France from the English. To fulfill this mission she knew that she would have to appear as a man, because women were not allowed to fight. She cut her hair, dressed as a man, and carried a weapon. She was determined to be more than an average young peasant woman.
