Diana Nyad
Diana Nyad is known for her bravery and her determination in the sport of swimming. Her goal was to not only swim from the Bahama Islands to Florida, but to swim the 60 miles without stopping at all.
Many told her that she was crazy and her goal was too difficult. Diana tried once to accomplish her goal and was stung by a sea animal called a Portuguese man-of-war. She was crying when they pulled her from the water.
She began her next swim just before 5 A.M. Her body was covered with latex. She wore goggles to keep the salt water out of her eyes. She also wore a few swimming caps on her head to keep her warm. Diana swam and swam. Her body hurt. To help her concentrate she did things like counting strokes and sang songs.
Her friends gave her something to drink every few hours. They followed her the whole way in a boat. It was hard to keep going because of the ocean currents. They kept pulling her back. Also, she was stung by a jellyfish and had a hard time going on.
Day turned into night and Diana kept on swimming. A few minutes after 8 AM, on August 20, Diana reached the Florida coast. Hundreds of people were cheering by the beach. Then Diana's feet touched the ground. Everyone rushed to meet her. Diana's left eye was swollen shut from the salt water. Diana felt bad, but happy. She had finally reached her goal. She swam over 60 miles because the current always pulled her back. Diana was very proud of accomplishing her goal.
