Clara Barton

1821-1912

Clara Barton was a school teacher. She started her career at age 15. She founded one of the first schools in New Jersey in 1852. She resigned in 1854 because a man was put there to be her superior.

She was the first female to work in the U.S. Patent Office. She worked as a clerk, and got the salary and status of a man. The Civil War was going on, so she worked as an unpaid nurse. She was promoted to superintentent of the Department of Nurses of the Army of James. Clara got women to contribute hospital things. She gave speeches about her experiences in medical and morale services. Clara suffered a nervous breakdown in 1868. She learned of an organization called Red Cross. Clara joined the Red Cross and helped people wherever disater struck. When she died she became known as Angel of the Battlefield for helping in the war and in the Red Cross.
