Amelia Earhart

1897-

Amelia Earhart was born in Achison, Kansas on July 24, 1897. Amelia became famous for her plane flights and aviation skills. Her most famous accomplishment was being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932.

Earhart's first job was as a nurse in Canada, caring for casualties of World War I.After the war she was briefly a premedical student at Columbia University. There, she was taught to fly by Neta Shook. Earhart soloed for the first time in Southern California during June 1921. A year later she bought her first plane, a Kinner Canary.

After moving back to New England to be with her mother, Earhart continued to fly. On June 17, 1928 Earhart soared into the public spotlight: the first flight of a woman across the Atlantic Ocean. With the help of a pilot and a mechanic. After that she became editor of Cosmopolitan magazine and vice president for Ludington Airlines.

In May, 1932 piloting a Lockheed Vega monoplane, Earhart became the first to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

On June 1, 1937, Amelia took off from Florida to attempt an around the world flight. She was never seen again.
