Rhinoceros

The rhinoceros belongs to the Rhinocerotidae family.  There are only five species of rhino.  There are three Asian types, and two African types.

The rhinoceros is the largest living mammal, excluding the elephant.  The skin is very thick.  It is a gray or brown color.   The vision of the rhinoceros is poor, but this shortcoming is made up for by its excellent sense of smell.  The rhinoceros is about 5.2 to 6.1 ft. (1.6 to 1.85 m) at shoulder height.  The rhinoceros is about 11 to 14 ft. (3.35 to 4.2 m) long.

The main diet of the rhinoceros is grass and other foliage.  The rhinoceros has a single horn to help it uproot plants to eat.

Rhinoceroses live in small herds.  One baby rhino is produced each year.  When the second calf is born, the older one is chased away by the mother.
