In A Poet's Heart: What This Site is About and Why

Everyone knows Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, Poe, and Longfellow. Anyone who's been through high school recently has read about them and learned about their lives in class. But why did they become so famous? Other good poets remained unpublished and unrecognized even as these few became the stars that shine their inspirational light down on other poets. What is the element that sets these masters apart from the rest of the flock?

A Poet could tell you. Any serious writer who has looked inside himself and found the yearning to outshine all others in the perfection of his writing could tell you.

Poetry and other literature is about expression. The writer has a message he wants to convey to the reader; a story he wants to tell; a point he wants you to understand; a feeling he wants you to remember for the rest of your life.

Unfortunately, though most poets possess the talent for poetry, few become famous because of one of the main things that separates poets from other people.

Poets can dare to be different. Sometimes it is easier for poets to allow themselves to be themselves. This factor of their personalities makes it easier for them to write meaningful poetry. They are giving of themselves and not a pre-concieved notion of what they should be giving.

The problem arises in the fact that, sadly, dedicated poets do not make up a significant percent of the population. People who write not of their free will are a dime a dozen, but the poets who write from their hearts are rare. A rhyme scheme is easily created, but a poem is a vigorous expression of feelings.

Since not too many people are mindreaders, society may not understand a poet's verse. Therefore the poem itself will lose its significance. The fact that the poem is personal designates the splendor it all so richly retains.
