Emily Dickinson was an incredible poet. The depth of feeling she expresses in her poetry is magnificent. She wrote over 1,800 poems, though only a few were published during her lifetime.

We have some of our favorites from among her poems, as well as links to several other pages that have her poetry and more in depth information about this wonderful poet.

Hope Is the thing with feathers

"Hope" is the thing with feathers-
That perches in the soul-
And sings the tune without the words-
And never stops - at all-

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard-
And sore must be the storm-
That could abash the little Bird-
That kept so many warm-

I've heard it in the chillest land-
And on the strangest Sea-
Yet, never, in Extremity
It asked a crumb - of me.

My life closed twice

My life closed twice before its close;
   It yet remains to see
If Immortality unveil
   A third event to me,

So huge, so hopeless to conceive,
   As these that twice befell.
Parting is all we know of heaven,
And all we need of hell.

Surgeons must be careful

Faith is a fine invention

This is my letter to the world

Just one heart

Because I could not stop for death

I never saw a moor

Some keep the Sabbath going to Church

Constant
