In contrast to the schools of practical political and social philosophy established by Confucius and his followers, there existed a religion based on the Tao, or natural way to truth. Taoists didnt care much for the fancy ceremonies or ideas of government put forward by Confucius. They thought that living simply, in harmony with nature, was the way people could find peace.
For Taoists, happiness was to be achieved through nature, while for Confucians, happiness was to be achieved by concentrating on and ordering society. Taoists believed that truth had to be felt rather than taught. No amount of learning could help a person find peace.
Followers of this mystical religion tended to to withdraw from public life because they say no purpose in being involved with governments, or even with other people. Those who strive for nothing cannot be disappointed was one favorite Taoist saying.
