Sitting Bull

Born in the Grand River area in present-day South Dakota in about 1831, Sitting Bull’s original name was Tatanka Yotanka. The leader of the Sioux tribe, he resisted movement to reservations. He fought against Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer in the Battle of the Little Bighorn, also called Custer’s Last Stand. After completely destroying Custer’s army Sitting Bull and his followers fled to Canada. After suffering famine, Sitting Bull returned to America in 1881 and was put in prison for two years. He was then relocated to a reservation where he continued to be hostile to the whites. In 1885, Sitting Bull was given permission to tour with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, probably to keep him from creating problems within the reservation. On December 15, 1890, U.S. police and soldiers arrested Sitting Bull, believing he was instigating a Sioux uprising. When his friends tried to rescue him, he was fatally shot.
