Annie Oakley

Born on August 13, 1860 in Patterson, Ohio, Annie Oakley’s real name was Phoebe Anne Oakley Mezee. At age six she began using a rifle to provide food for her family. At age 16 she challenged and beat well-known marksman Frank Butler; they were later married. Annie was a star at stunt shooting: she could shoot a playing card in half or hit a dime mid-air from 90 feet away. She toured with the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show from 1885 to 1902. Her life inspired Irving Berlin’s musical Annie Get Your Gun.
