The best defense against being struck by lightning or swept away
by a flash flood is knowing what to expect and reacting properly to that
particular situation. Before a thunderstorm hits, know what county or
parish you live in. If your Local National Weather Service office issues
a severe thunderstorm warning, they will issue it based on counties or
parishes. If you are caught outside and see a storm approaching,
take shelter immediately. Go to the nearest building and move to the
bottom floor. If there is no shelter nearby, find a low spot away from
trees, fences and metal poles. If you are in the woods, take shelter
under the smallest tree possible. If you feel your skin start to tingle
or your hair stand on end, squat low to the ground on the balls of your feet.
Place your hand on your knees with your head between them. This will
help make you the smallest target possible.
