After a big snowfall, people have a
big chore ahead of them; shoveling your driveway. This is one of winters
biggest outdoor chores that need to be done. For elderly people, shoveling
driveways can be deadly. Becuase senior citizens are mostly inactive, shoveling
put a great strain on their bodies and especially their heart. This is why
we hear of so many people dieing after a heavy snowfall.
This photo above shows a truck that is
stranded in a driveway. Perhaps is this truck had 4-wheel drive it would
be able to get out of the drifted snow. When driving with 4-wheel drive,
it does make it easier to get through the heavy snow, but remember, it takes
just as long to stop as any ordinary vehicle.
Even after the streets have been plowed,
the wind blows the snow back onto the streets making it virtually impassible
again. During the Blizzard of 1993, the streets in the suburbs of Pittsburgh
were impassible becuase the snow continued to drift and the plows just
couldn't keep up.
So much snow fell during the Blizzard of
1993, that snow ordinances were put into affect. People were not allowed
to shovel the snow in their driveway's into the street or they would be issued
a warning from the local authorities.
In places like Erie, PA and Buffalo, NY,
so much snow falls, that they literally run out of places to put it. As you
can see from the picture above, the snow on the side of the road is piling
up very fast.
This is a picture of a snowplow doing
its best to keep up with the snow. In southern parts of the United
States, snow is very rare, therefore they do not have plows. But when it
does snow, they are forced to bring in plows from other parts of the Country.
This is another picture of a snow plow.
Most snow plows have the main plow in front and have either salt, or a salt
and cinder mix in the back to melt the ice on the roads and help give
motorists traction. However, when temperatures drop below 0°F, salt
doesn't work as well, and in some cases, doesn't work at all. This is
a major problem during arctic outbreaks when temperatures do drop to below
0°F
