Glossary


 

Alleles: two types of genes, which are dominant and recessive

Amino acid: a small molecule that is the building blocks of proteins

Base: a building block of DNA,

Cell: the smallest self-contained living unit.

Chromosome: a structure in the nucleus of a living thing that contains DNA, and is used to pass genes down to any future generations

Cloning: a process of producing cells and living things with identical

genes

DNA: the substance of which genes are made

Dominant: A gene that shows the characeristics of another gene.

Gene: A unit of inheritance, or instructions for making a protein

Gene mapping: locating the positions of genes in a chromosome.

Generation: usually the inheritance of a living creature

Mutation: an inheritable change resulting from an alteration in DNA.

Offspring: Any organism that resembles its parent.

Protein: a large molecule containing one or more chains of amino acid

Recessive: a gene that hides a certain dominant trait

Species: a group of organisms that can breed or produce offspring

Virus: a parasite that can only reproduce inside cells of other organisms
