For Starters

What kind of shoes should I wear?

If you're just starting out, you should wear slippers, Not toe shoes! In most dancewear stores, you can find shoes with split soles (shoes with two separate pieces of leather for the sole) as well as regular soles. If you've been dancing for a long time, your teacher may have you take a toe shoe test to see if you can get toe shoes. If you do get them, don't forget toe pads.

What else do I wear?

First, put on white, pink, or tan tights. Then, pull on a leotard, with long, short, or spaghetti strap sleeves (some teachers may want you to wear black or another solid color). Put on your skirt. It can be a wrap-round skirt or can have an elastic waist. Finally, slip on your shoes. If you have toe shoes, see On Your Toes to find out how to tie them. Also, always wear your hair up. If you have short hair, clip some pieces up so it's out of your face.
