Shuttle InsigniaShuttle animation The need for a reuseable space craft was tremendous. NASA needed a space vehicle that could fly over and over again. NASA was running out of funding for the Apollo type spacecrafts due to the fact that we had beaten the Russians to the moon and the public didn't see why we needed to keep flying to outer space and do what we had already done before. There was a great deal of SPACE JUNK orbiting the Earth that was left up there by the old Apollo type crafts. A large part of that junk was American made junk.

The Space Shuttle was just the answer NASA was looking for. NASA hoped that the Space Shuttle would help man reach the Red Planet "MARS". The way the Shuttle could help NASA reach this goal was by assiting NASA in the construction of an orbiting Space station. From this station, missions to Mars would be launched. These goals turned out to be a little lofty and will actually never be reached by the Shuttle. However, the Shuttle has enabled the US to enter space far more frequently than before. This fact along with the reusability have made the Shuttle a successful project.
