The Saxophone is a "Single Reed", curved woodwind instrument with about 24 keys. It comes in 4 main sizes; soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. It isn't used much in orchestral music, but is very popular in bands and jazz. A "single reed" is one piece of thin wood (usually cane or bamboo) placed against the mouthpiece. The reed vibrates when air passes between the reed and the mouthpiece to make the sound. No one knows for sure where it came from, but some believe that the sax was created when people experimented with playing brass instruments with a single reed.
